The San Juan chapter is relatively a new chapter of the Navajo Nation, located in San Juan County, New Mexico. The
San Juan River, for which the county and the chapter are named after, forms the northern boundary of the chapter. Shiprock, which is a major population center of the the Navajo Nation, is located approximately ten miles to the west. Farmington is a "border town" and is a major shopping center by reservation residents. It is located approximately 20 miles to the east.
The San Juan Chapter conducts monthly meetings to keep residents informed; residents have a forum to express their opinions to their Navajo Nation Council Delegate or to decide on matters concerning the chapter.
Another visible and well-known landmark is the Hogback Ridge, which was formed by geological faults in the area. The main road through the community is graveled. There are no paved roads within the San Juan Chapter area. Shiprock BIA Branch of Roads infrequently maintains the gravel roads.
There are no commercial stores in the chapter boundaries. There are stores approximately two miles north of the chapter house. However, they are located across the San Juan River and there is no bridge. The Fruitland Trading Post is the next closest, but is a twenty mile round trip.
